Four retirees from Coopers Chase retirement village are members of the Thursday Murder Club to keep themselves active. Elizabeth Best, the leader of the club, digs up unsolved murder mysteries that they try to figure out. While analysing an old murder case, they stumble upon a new one - one of the owners of Coopers Chase, Tony Curran, is found dead soon after he had an open conflict with his business partner Ian Ventham over the future of the retirement house. Ventham was planning to remove the elderly inhabitants and turn the whole area into a residential estate. The member of the Thursday Murder Club are keen to take on this case, which simply landed on their lap, but DCI Chris Hudson does not want to hear anything about amateurs getting involved in his investigation. Elizabeth manages to get involved the young constable Donna De Freitas as their spy within the police force, when another dead body changes their initial suspicions.

The movie based on Richard Osman’s novel is unfortunately a mixed bag - on one hand there is a very strong cast, but on the other it is dragged down by a rather shallow plot full of clichés and scenes detached from reality. Since the novel was a fast-selling bestseller, it is surprising that the film adaptation is rather disappointing - not only full of one-dimensional characters and over-simplified solutions to problems the Thursday Murder Club is facing, but also the whole story feels more like an episode of Midsomer Murders than a serious, stand-alone production.
