Somerset, a veteran police detective, is about to retire and refuses to take a new case when he realizes that it is gonna be a long one - the body of an obese man was found in his house, bound and literally fed to death. For Somerset is it clear that they are facing someone determined, intelligent and clearly insane. But since there is no one else around with enough experience to lead that investigation, Somerset is stuck with it and with a new partner, Mills. Further search of the crime scene reveals a word "gluttony" written on the wall, which pushes the investigation into a new direction - a sadistic killer with possible religious obsession. Somerset is reluctant to pursue the case, Mills is keen to take it over, but when another body is found, it becomes clear that it would take the combination of their skills to find the culprit. Somerset starts by searching the library for more information about religions, while Mills is trying to settle down in a new apartment with his wife, Tracy.

Classic crime movie, one of the best of its kind with a unique plot, very good cast and dark atmosphere. Of course, it has some flaws: a veteran police detective just before the retirement is a cliché, being stuck with the new partner who is the opposite of that veteran cop is nothing new, from the beginning the investigation is going down the obvious path, but Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt made it work. The scale of the story, the original narration and well-built atmosphere make you overlook the cartoonish bits of Seven.
