The Crimson Rivers 2000 detective movie

The Crimson Rivers (2000, France)
Superintendent Pierre Niemans from Paris is taking over a murder case in the secluded town of Gueron near the Alps. A young professor from a local prestigious university was found dead in the mountains, obviously he was tortured before his death and the murderer cut off his hands and removed eyeballs. Meanwhile, inspector Max Kerkerian is follows a routine checks into, on surface, petty crimes - someone has vandalised a grave on the local graveyard and there was a breaking in reported in nearby school archives. The two petty crimes seem to be linked to something in the past, but Kerkerian is struggling to find a link between them. Soon, both policemen end up in the same spot, unknowing their cases are actually linked to the same place - the elite university. The clues, seemingly with no connection, begin to fall into the right places.
French production with very good cast and unique atmosphere - the mix of a secluded location, stuffy academic community, dark secrets from the past which someone is trying to keep hidden. All of it builds an intriguing plot that will keep the viewer guessing until the very end. Great performance from Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel, plus a well-written script, turned this into an instant hit that produced a sequel (with Jean Reno) and a TV series (unfortunately with a completely different characters and different cast).
