Commissar Visconti went through a painful divorce, his son became a drug dealer, and he himself turned to alcohol to cope with the life. His job and his estranged wife also are not helping with the stress. While he was dealing with what his life became, he got a new case, a teenage boy went missing from a suburb housing estate. Visconti was not keen to take the case on, he told the mother of the boy to wait until the morning. As it turned out, the next day there was still no sign of the teenager, so reluctantly Visconti visits the home of the missing child, looks around the place and starts to build the first theory, when he gets information that there was a phone call. Some called the emergency line, said that police should look for the body in the nearby forest, and hanged up. That is not much to begin with, but with lack of other leads, the police organizes the search party, which produces no results. The commissar notices one more details - the missing boy was given free private lessons by a teacher who leaves in the same building.

Black Tide is not a typical detective story nor police drama, even though it starts like most of the movies in the genre - there is a teenager missing, the mysterious phone call, then suddenly the new clues begin to emerge. But all of this is shown through the eyes of the veteran police officer, who is tired of it all and fed up with people as a whole. The film is a mixture of the investigation and a look at the people involved, which is not always a pretty sight. The setting is rather bleak, the characters are complex, and the story becomes ambiguous with time. It is an interesting position, but not if you are looking for a more typical detective story.
