Inspector Maigret is put in charge of an investigation of an old (some say former) gangster, Manuel Palmari. Maigret knew him well in the past as the owner of a bar, The Golden Nail in Paris, where a lot of crime figures were hanging around. Palmari himself was involved in the burglaries, especially those involving jewellery, but after he was shot, which put him in the wheelchair, he became a recluse in his own flat. The word in the street was that Palmari is no longer involved in any criminal activities, and he supports himself from The Golden Nail incomes, but with recent series of burglaries around Paris, always targeting jewellers, Maigret has suspicions that Palmari is still somehow active in the underworld. In the past few years, he hardly practically never left his flat, he spent most of his days locked in a small room with just a radio and some magazines. That day he was found shot in the neck in that particular room, which from the start put Maigret in a difficult position. Palmari lived only with his girlfriend, Aline Bauche, who was under police surveillance every time she was leaving the apartment. The gangster was very mistrustful, he was never meeting people from outside, and somehow he let someone shoot him in the back. Aline was out, shopping for groceries, constantly followed by a police detective, the concierge in the building is positive only a single person from outside entered the building that day, and it was a delivery from the butcher shop. While a lot of people might have wanted Palmari dead, Maigret is struggling to find any real suspects, so starts to look around the building...

One of the Maigret books, where seemingly not much is going on, yet with each discovery the circumstances of the murder change completely. Maigret starts with a body of a man, who many would like to kill, but no one seemingly could have a chance, since the building and girlfriend of the victim were under police surveillance, yet someone, somehow have.
