Judge Dee is given his first assignment as a magistrate in a town of Peng-lai. The town has a bad reputation because of the tales of ghosts and weretigers (a local equivalent of a werewolves), but the first task that Dee will have to tackle is even more disturbing. His predecessor in Peng-lai died suddenly, most likely poisoned, and even an investigator sent from the capital city did not manage to solve this mystery. To make things even more complicated, a clerk from the local courthouse did not show up for work and no one can find him, not to mention a young woman vanished while travelling to Peng-lai from a nearby village. Judge Dee needs to find out quickly what is going on in the town before the ridiculous gossip regarding supernatural forces operating around here will complicate the situation even further. When he gets through the belongings of his predecessor looking for clues, he stumbles upon the ghost of the previous judge...

Despite not being the first book of the series, The Chinese Gold Murders jumps back to the first assignment of Judge Dee and the events that turned bandits Chiao Tai and Ma Joong into the adjutants of the judge. The plots surrounding the murder of previous judge in Peng-lai and disappearance of two people are emphasized by the uneasy atmosphere of the town and the reputation of being haunted. The detective skills of Judge Dee are put to the test when he will have to face the fact that ghosts might really exist.
