Murder in Canton 1966 detective book

Murder in Canton (1966, Netherlands)
Judge Dee is given a secret mission of finding out what happened to the Imperial censor, who left the capital city and travelled incognito to the port city of Canton. Canton, an important trading epicentre, has its own atmosphere - there is quite extensive number of traders from India and Middle East present, ships from many parts of the world bring their cargo to this place. Officially, Judge Dee is here to investigate the trade with Arabic merchants, although there are rumours that some of them might try to plan some sort of revolt. As a high-ranking official now, Judge Dee has to step lightly within the local politics and community consisting of people of different origin. The missing censor did not inform anyone in the capital city about his plans and now that the emperor is on a verge of death the conspiracies within the central government make the investigation even more complicated. Soon the man, who was travelling with the censor, is found dead while he was trying to contact Dee.
Last of the Judge Dee novels, is kept similarly to other stories, although the plot is presented in a completely different way - instead of running few cases at the same time, Judge Dee has to face a murder case that has far-reaching consequences for the whole empire and shadowy figures, who seem to be involved in some way. It is more "western" novel, where the plot unveils through the events that at first glance are hard to put together in a complete story, and it is one of the best books in the series.
