On the way from a conference in Bordeaux, Inspector Maigret decides to visit his old friend Chabot in a small town of Fontenay-le-Comte. Chabot is a local criminal judge (in French judicial system it is a person in charge of the police investigations, not person presiding in the court), they did not see each other for almost 20 years, so they both look forward to the meeting. Unfortunately, the arrival of Maigret coincide with events that shook the local community. Someone killed a member of an influential family using just a metal object, like a pipe. This brought into the light the years-long quarrels withing that family and soon the whole community was suspecting that the culprit was someone from within that family. But things changed when an old widow was attacked in the doorway of her home, using a very similar weapon. One murder was shocking for the small community, but two brutal murders withing few days started the rumour that there is a madman roaming the streets of Fontenay-le-Comte. Soon after the arrival of Maigret a third body is found in the street...

One of the Maigret novels that takes us away from Paris, this time into the small community of a small town, where everyone knows everyone else and every secret will soon or later be revealed. It is also one of the Maigret books, where he is not the central character (since he is not in charge of the investigation), instead he has to delve into the tangled web of local social and historical connections.
