Night Train (1997, United Kingdom)
Detective Mike Hoolihan is an alcoholic, lives a boring and unsatisfying life, she is sometimes mistaken for a man, and not only because of her name. With a chequered past, shed ended up as a "suicide whisperer" in the police force, she is given all the worst parts of such investigations to deal with. This time the call came from her former boss and mentor, chief of the police, Tom Rockwell. His beautiful daughter, Jennifer, was found dead with a shot wound to the head. The initial conclusion is that it was a suicide, but attractive Jennifer, a successful astrophysicist, in a steady relationship, seemingly had no reasons to kill herself. What is more, the coroner finds more than one bullet wound on her head, but Hoolihan knows that, even though this defies logic, multiple shot wounds could still be self-inflicted.
This novel by Martin Amis, was described as comedic parody of American detective novels, it was described as pastiche of the genre or Amis "play with convention" of the mystery novels. On surface, it is a book about the police investigation by a detective, who has more problems of her own than she would admit. She does all the basics, tries to cover all the angles, but underneath the story is more about the pointlessness of it all and the lives people live, rather than the victim or the investigation. It is not a great novel, even assuming it was supposed to be a parody, it is filled with awkward dialogues, not that interesting subplots and incoherent ending.
