The Inspector Lynley Mysteries 2001 detective show

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries (2001, United Kingdom)
Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers is not an easy person to work with - she is secretive when it comes to her personal life and very vocal when it would be best for her to remain silent. Their superiors are pushing her from one post to another because they cannot get rid of her. The best idea they could come up with is to assign her to a partner that would finally push her to the limit. They choose DI Thomas Lynley, a posh officer, with aristocratic background. Lynley himself is a bit of a pariah among the force, for something he did in the past - reported irregularities in one of the investigations, which caused a few officers to be removed from the force without future pension. Havers and Lynley are assigned to a tricky case - someone killed an older farmer in a secluded part of Yorkshire, his daughter survived the attack, but is unable to communicate with the world. To make things even more complicated, both Lynley and Havers have personal reasons to be on edge.
TV series based on Elizabeth George crime novels about DI Lynley, which mixed sometimes gruesome atmosphere with classical whodunit. The premise was not the most original one - two completely opposite partners, who are forced to work together, but it was handled subtly enough not to overshadow the well-developed plots. The only weak point of the show was the fact that after the creators adapted all the Elizabeth George novels, they started to use other screenwriters to write further episodes and the level of their work was really uneven.
