David Briggs and Bob Louis are a couple set in heaven, Briggs is inept and pompous, Louis is inept and clumsy. When two people like that meet up, they just have to work together... to spare other people from working with them. But the British police force have a place even for detectives like that, what is more they are given tasks that would challenge their skills. Or the lack of them. From murders to covering scandals in the royal family and guarding precious eggs of a rare bird - you name it, they have done it. Their superior, Superintendent Cottam, found a way to deal with them, or to be exact to keep them away from him - he gives them the assignments no one else wants to take or those that could put them in some danger.

Comedy series The Detectives was a parody of British cop shows and mystery classics - Briggs and Louis were involved in stories that could have been used in serious detective shows (or had crossovers with serious series f.e. Bergerac, The Paradise Club) or classic movies (The Rear Window), but with a comic twist. The pairing of a comedian Jasper Carrott as Louis and serious actor Robert Powell as Briggs gave that extra layer to the chemistry in this duo - their characters more or less hate each other, but at the same time they depend on each other, because no one else would want to work with them. The goofy personality of Louis and pompous attitude of Briggs parodies the typical pair of mismatched partners in cop shows, but in this case, they are more like each other than they would imagine. The show was running for 5 seasons with 31 episodes produced, each one of them a top quality entertainment.
