Midsomer Murders (1997, United Kingdom)
The picturesque county of Midsomer consist of village and small towns in the heart of England, but the first impression of the place could be misleading. Yes, there are lovely small parishes, old historic buildings and tightly knitted communities, but DCI Tom Barnaby could tell you completely different stories that take place there. As the most senior detective, he handles basically all murder cases in the area and there is a lot of them. For the area that looks like the most peaceful place in the world, people die of non-natural causes or in suspicious circumstance more often than you would expect. And especially since the communities he has to deal with is typically so tightly knitted, Barnaby and his colleagues often have a problem to dig up the real cause of the problems and find people who would have a motive to kill.
Midsomer Murders, based upon the Chief Inspector Barnaby series of crime novels by Caroline Graham, is in the way the quintessence of the traditional cosy mystery. We have here a thoroughly honest detective, living together with his family in a picturesque, rural part of England, full of forests and agricultural lands, where life is closer to nature and everything seems to be running much slower. We have murders that are rarely really brutal, it could be a vicar, an actor in a local amateur drama society, could be just a retiree, someone who at first glance would have no enemies. And we have the episodes that are much longer than in the typical crime series - around 90 minutes per episode instead of usual 45-50 minutes per episode. So, we have picturesque, rural area, slow pacing and longer episodes - it is the ultimate formula for cosy mysteries.
And if you like that subgenre of the detective stories, then Midsomer Murders will keep you occupied for a long, long time, because the series is now in its 26th series, which makes it one of the longest-running shows in history. As for the quality of the material, it varies, as can be expected in such a long production, but overall it is interesting series if whodunnits. It is a mix all of the elements you would expect in a rural setting - from murders among the richest to dark secrets of a small farming community.
