Messiah 2001 detective show

Messiah (2001, United Kingdom)
DCI Red Metcalfe and his team are assigned to investigate the death of a chef, who was found hanging from a landing ceiling. The victim had the tongue cut out and a silver spoon inserted into his mouth. While this crime was bizarre, to say the least, the police is even more puzzled when a second victim is found, this time a student who was beheaded. Red begins to suspect that the second victim might have been killed because he was gay, but before the investigators have time to explore that theory another victim is found, a bishop beaten to death in his house. The situation becomes even more complicated for Metcalfe when his brother is released from the prison, which causes additional tension between the detective and his deaf wife, Susan. When the team is building a possible connection between the victims, some of the gruesome details of the crimes begin to leak to the press.
British miniseries, first of five instalments, was based on a novel by Boris Starling, which became an instant hit because of the multi-layered plot, fast pace and gory crimes. The TV adaptation was sprinkled with very good cast (Ken Stott, Edward Woodward) and kept the dark atmosphere of the novel. Even when the police gets on a right track and plot seems to be moving to a straightforward ending, you still are gonna be surprised with what will happen next. It is a slightly forgotten gem of British TV.
