During a midsummer day, a single mother, Annie Raft, and her 7-year-old daughter Mia get off the bus in a small town in northern Sweden. She just left her job as a teacher in Stockholm to join her boyfriend, who lives nearby in a commune-like settlement. But her boyfriend did not show up at the bus stop, and Annie is stranded in a place she knows nothing about. She learns from a local shop owner that the commune is located in a very secluded place and quite far from where she is. She also learns that the locals do not care much for the commune members, they are treated with hostility. Nevertheless, the shop owner draws her a simple map and drives her part of the way, but does not let her forget that he despises the people from the commune. Soon after, they are left alone in the woods, Annie losses the bearing, and they end up on a riverbank. While trying to find the way to the commune, Annie stumbles upon a small tent, in which she discovers the bodies of a young couple, who were stabbed to death. Traumatized, she returns to the town to inform the police. The local doctor, Birger Torbjörnsson, and the new area police officer, Åke, were planning to spend the upcoming midsummer night on fishing down the river, but the murder case is their main priority now.

A Swedish TV series, based on a crime novel by Kerstin Ekman, takes place in two realities - the 1970s when the original investigation was still ongoing and in current time, when people involved in the story, are still trying to figure out who was behind the murders. While on the surface it seems like a perfect setting for a mystery movie, but at the same time, stretching the story into a six-part series was a mistake. A lot of the scenes are just filler, which have very little to do with what actually happened, and the atmosphere is more or less non-existent. The unsolved murder case from decades ago means that the killer most likely still lives there, but the locals do not seem to be bothered by that fact, which ruins the interesting setting.
