Dexter Morgan, a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department, has quite dark secret that helps him cope with his day-to-day contact with horrors of this world that are seen at the crimes scenes - he creates a new one. Adopted by a police officer Harry Morgan when his mother was brutally murdered, Dexter developed the sociopathic tendencies that with time (and with the help of Harry), Dexter became a vigilante serial killer, who targets criminals. He uses his access to police files to track down and kill people who, in his mind, do not deserve to live and fulfils his dark desires by creating a sort-of ritual out of this. During the days, he helps the police to find the killers, during the evenings he goes after those, which police is unable to stop from killing again. But just like any other serial killer, Dexter has to balance his work and his hobby, not to become a prime suspect in his own case.

A crime, mystery, police procedure and serial killer series all wrapped-up in one. Dexter Morgan weaves a delicate web of lies, murders and deception when he tries to serve justice to those, who were able to avoid the judicial system, while becoming the beast himself. Since we look through the eyes of a serial killer, who believes he is taking part in a just cause, this builds an internal and external tension between the main character, the people around him and the viewers. On one hand, we want to believe he is doing the right thing, even though he clearly takes several steps beyond the border of justice and into the vigilante zone. After a few seasons, the formula got a bit stale, but the early seasons of Dexter were surprisingly entertaining in a weird sort of way.
