The Wicker Man (1973, United Kingdom)
After the police receives an anonymous letter, reporting a teenage girl named Rowan Morrison missing on one of the remote Scottish islands, Sergeant Howie begins the investigation. His first impressions are surprising - no one in this small community seems to be alarmed by his arrival, no one seems to be worried about the fate of the girl. What is more, Howie is told that Rowan Morrison was never there in the first place. The overall atmosphere of the place, the picturesque village and the fact that the locals are preparing for the May Day celebration hoping to bring a good harvest this year, makes the whole story seems surreal. Sergeant Howie, however, believes his instincts that there is some going on behind all of this. He tries to question the students in the local school, but all of them deny Rowan ever existed. In the school register, he finds the name Rowan Morrison, and the schoolteacher tells him that Rowan was dead.
A classic British mystery movie which was based around a simple enough premise of a missing teenager, but through the pagan-like local traditions and the unique atmosphere of the place, The Wicker Man became an icon. The tension built by the wall of silence that seems to be surrounding Rowan Morrison, mixed with the almost surreal tone of some scenes, created a unique and unforgettable masterpiece of British cinema.
