When Harold Speck, a travelling salesman, is seating in a diner, a suspiciously looking man approaches him and starts asking him uncomfortable questions. Soon after, Harold is found dead in his car, the killer has removed his eyelids and left behind a "zero" sign in a piece of paper. FBI agent Thomas Mackelway arrives to the crime scene and starts searching the place, hoping to find clues. Mackelway is not in great place right now, he was recently suspended for beating up a suspected serial killer, which means he has to work even harder on this case to get in the good books of his superiors. But to make things worse his partner in this investigation will be Fran Kulok, with whom he has some patchy past. Apart from the "zero" sign, they find nothing solid to get things moving. This changes when they receive a fax from someone who claims to be the killer.
Suspect Zero was a film that is hard to easily describe - it is a mystery movie, serial killer movie, investigation movie, a bit of paranormal movie, and it tried even to be a bit of a horror movie, but overall the final effect was messy, to say the least. With Ben Kingsley and Carrie-Anne Moss in the cast, you could expect to be at least a solid story behind the script or some deeper idea, but the story in fact is the weakest spot of the whole project. You have and FBI agent chasing after a serial killer, you have the mysterious man using psychic powers, you have mysterious messages and... all of it goes more or less nowhere. It had the potential, it had the good cast, it had the mystery surrounding remote viewing, and all Suspect Zero needed to be a success was a decent story to put all of this together. And this is the bit that was ultimately missing.
