The Right to Remain Silent (1996, United States)
Officer Christine Paley starts her duty at the police station on the night shift. Lieutenant Mike Brosloe, in charge of the station, has no time to show her the ropes, she will have to learn the hard way the reality of the police work. But at least the first night she will get the easier assignment - booking the arrested people or taking care of others, who were brought to the station. With each case, she quickly learns that there is no such thing as a typical case, each suspect or the victim have their own story to tell and their own approach to what just happened. She listens to a drunk driver, who had a collision with the deer and has no idea why he was arrested, a husband who killed his wife, a crossdresser who wants to live the life he chose, a woman, who has a medical problem. Each of those conversations will change her view on some things, but also will teach her a lesson that not everything is what it seems at first glance.
A TV movie based on a play, with a good script and good cast - Lea Thompson as the young police officer and Robert Loggia as the veteran lieutenant were an excellent choice. The stories shown in the film were on one had surprising, but at the same time they showed how many things in the world are neither black or white, they all are in different shades of grey, and it is hard to navigate through them with just superficial judgement. On closer look, things might look completely different.
