Detective: A Text Adventure Game 1993 detective game

Detective: A Text Adventure Game (1993, United States)
Detective: A Text Adventure Game (sometimes referred to simply as Detective) was a single-player text adventure game released during the era when text-based games were still popular. The game begins with your character being summoned to the chief’s office, where you learn that the mayor of the city has been found dead, a victim of a murder. With the press hovering dangerously close to breaking the news and the FBI poised to take over the investigation, the chief dumps on your shoulder the task of solving it quickly.
This interactive adventure was built using the Adventure Game Toolkit, a game engine specifically designed for text-based titles (hence the name). The engine provided players with a degree of freedom, allowing them to decide what actions their character would take next, thereby adding a layer of creativity and unpredictability to the gameplay. Despite its potential for exploration, Detective was notably short, some contemporary reviewers even noted that the game could be completed in as few as 30 moves. However, the game was not intended to be a serious challenger, more like a parody, hence the presence of instant death rooms and humorous undertones.
In terms of gameplay, Detective offered a short gameplay (according to Moby Games, players could explore a total of 56 unique locations and score up to 355 points). This scoring system added an extra layer of challenge, encouraging players to fully engage with the game’s mechanics to achieve the best possible outcome.
