Doctor Watson’s journal presents the six, yet unknown, adventures of famous amateur detective, Sherlock Holmes, a genius, master of disguise and a toffee-nosed ponce. But the cases in this, newly discovered, casebook of Sherlock Holmes are not what you would expect, it is a parody of the Sir Conan Doyle’s books. They are set in the same era as the original work, late 19th century, but the nature of the cases, as well as the colourful characters they stumble upon, are quite different.
Roy Hudd, who played Sherlock Holmes in this "adaptation", was a comedian known for The News Huddlines, a radio comedy sketch show, a parody of current affairs and The Newly Discovered Casebook of Sherlock Holmes is kept in quite similar tone. The dreadful puns, risqué jokes and sometimes breaking the fourth wall, made it stand out among the detective shows of the era.
That kind of humour might not be for everyone’s taste, some of the elements might have been a bit too old-fashioned, but at the same time it is one of the few examples of successful parodies of Sherlock Holmes that avoided all the clichés. Plus, the cast also included renown English actors, like June Whitfield, Geoffrey Whitehead and Jeffrey Holland, which makes it even more interesting.
